BlackBerry App World beats Android Market in Profitability, and other interesting facts

Alec Saunders, VP of Developer Relations at RIM, took the stage at DevCon Europe this morning to bring some more excellent news to developers. The biggest announcement of his was that BlackBerry App World is the second most profitable mobile application market out there. The iOS App Store is the only mobile market that beats App World, and the Android Market comes in third. Saunders also had a few more stats to discuss about BlackBerry Development, including:
- 6 million downloads a day from App World
- 26 currencies over 160 markets are supported
- 40 carriers allow carrier billing for App World
- BlackBerry developers make 40% more profit vs. Android developers
Those are some good stats from a platform that most in the US consider to be “dying” or “failing.” I think RIM is doing a great job showing both developers and consumers that they are still alive and well, despite the rough patch the company has seen. And with PlayBook 2.0 and BlackBerry 10 on the horizon, these numbers are sure to grow even larger.
