It’s no secret that the Playbook will be getting upgraded to the new BB10 OS. The question has always been a matter of timing. It was released yesterday from RIM via the wonderful world of tweeter that “Cascades support for PlayBook will come w/ the PlayBook OS upgrade to BB10, shortly after launch of 1st BB10 smartphone.” When is this you may ask? New BB10 devices are scheduled to be announced in August of this year, with a release of the first new BB10 devices in October. The upgrade to BB10 OS may still be a few months off, this could be taken as a sign of good news that things are moving along nicely and on schedule for RIM.

We saw this app release a few weeks back and get pulled immediately from App World. There was no explanation behind the quick release and pull but now it’s officially available. RIM has now announced the official release and the full Angry Birds suite of games is available for download in App World for the BlackBerry PlayBook. This latest installment brings the birds to a whole new environment, space. The gameplay experience is totally new here, with new physics to reflect both zero gravity in space and gravity fields of planets and asteroids. It’s available for $2.99 at the link below.
It’s hard to believe that it has been a whole year since the BlackBerry PlayBook launched. In just one year, we have seen thousands of new apps and developers come to the platform, an update to OS 2.0, and lots of new BlackBerry family members. It’s been a year since the original PlayBook launched and it’s about time for a refresh. There’s rumors of a new PlayBook with a 1.5 GHz processor and 4G LTE on the horizon, and after a year with no changes, BlackBerry world 2012 would be a great time for a refresh to launch.
So, Here’s to a year of great times with our PlayBooks and many more years to come with new PlayBook models!

It seems like no matter how much App World grows, BlackBerry is still kryptonite to some of the top apps like Netflix and Skype. Today, Skype confirmed through their Twitter support channel, @SkypeSupport, that they have “No plans for a BlackBerry PlayBook-compatible Skype release.” This is another huge blow for RIM in the quest to fill App World with quality applications. This comes just days after the popular BlackBerry app, YouMail, announced they would quit developing for the platform due to a declining number of BlackBerry users.
All these major application developers declining to develop for BlackBerry makes for lots of frustrated BlackBerry users. I can assure you; however, that RIM is working hard both in-house and with external developers to bring all the best applications to BlackBerry. It may not be this week, or even this year, but once BlackBerry 10 launches and adoption picks back up, all the major applications will follow. Just keep your heads up, BlackBerry faithful, BlackBerry 10 is on the horizon, and with it will come all new opportunities for the brand to grow.

In addition to the mentioned changes, RIM has also included the Zinio Magazine Reader application in this update. It’s a great way to subscribe and read magazines and I recommend checking it out. - Bubba Time from Rock and Roll Game Studio Now Available for PlayBook

Rock and Roll Game Studio, the team that brought you Dummy Jake, has just released a new PlayBook game today. This new game is called “Bubba Time” and it’s a platformer with a solid mix of puzzles and action. Here’s what the developers have to say about the game:
“Bubba Time is a platformer that gathers awesome features and a great challenge. Embody a small and squishy pink creature and solve the numerous game boards that you will encounter in this great mix of action and puzzle. Your game objective is to push the levers to open the exit doors. Then, you’ll have to slow motion the time to avoid enemies. Use your ability to create blocks and to teleport to reach inaccessible places. A real challenge due to the complexity of certain levels! For the gamers, Bubba Time is a mix of two major games: Solomon’s Key and Braid!”
Their first PlayBook game was a success and I expect this one will be, as well. You can grab Bubba Time in App World for just $0.99. You can view the full Press Release for this game after the break.

Whoops! For a brief moment, the Playbook App World had a new Tab in its line up reading “Verizon Wireless Store”, if you were able to click it nothing would happen except of course for widespread internet speculation! That being said there has been recent chatter that 3G and/or 4G models of the Playbook have gone into carrier testing, it would certainly appear so with Verizon being the first to give us a test of what is to come. Should be an interesting next few months!

Today has seen lots of internet chatter about the side-loading of applications to the BlackBerry PlayBook and upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices. This was all started when Alec Saunders, RIM’s VP of Developer Relations, tweeted that they will be removing the ability for consumers to side-load apps in an effort to combat application piracy. This has gotten the BlackBerry community up in arms about the future of side-loading and OTA downloading of applications. Follow on past the break as we take a look at the topic of side-loading and see what Alec Saunders has to say about its future.
