IMG 00000031 BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 Update Now Available

RIM has finally released BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 to all PlayBook owners. This release has been in Beta testing with developers for a few months and is now ready for public consumption. Some of the major changes RIM is highlighting include:

  • Updated BlackBerry Bridge: Now you can view, respond and compose new SMS messages on their BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet when connected to a BlackBerry smartphone over Bluetooth®. You’ll also enjoy increased performance and speed of other BlackBerry Bridge functions as well. So you can do more, more efficiently. Txt away, my friends.
  • Email and PIM Enhancements: You’ve asked for it and we’ve delivered portrait support for email, calendar and contacts, giving you the option to use your tablet in either orientation to message. This will definitely come in handy for those of you who enjoy thumb typing in portrait mode like I do.
  • Improved Android Application Support: Includes Multi-Window Applications, Camera Support and In-App Payments. We all love a richer app experience, and with the improvements to the Android runtime, that’s just what you’ll get. Running the applications in separate windows allows you to multi-task between Android apps easier, and in-app payments will make it easier for you to enhance your app content. Game on!
  • Secure all data on the tablet: the enterprise-grade encryption can now be extended to secure personal data stored on the device
  • Print To Go Update: “Print” documents from a PC to a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet using the Print To Go app even if the PC and tablet are connected to different networks;
  • Enterprise Improvements: Improvements to Enterprise functions including over-the-air enrollment to the BlackBerry Mobile Fusion server, support for ActiveSync certificate-based authentication, and additional IT Policy controls.

To update your PlayBook OS, just tap the update notification icon on the menu bar when it pops up. If you don’t want to wait for the notification, you can manually check for the update by going into the settings menu, tapping “Software Updates” and then tapping “Check for Updates.”

Important Compatibility Note: This update is only available for WiFi-only BlackBerry PlayBook models in 16, 32, or 64GB. The 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook is updated by the respective carrier and not by RIM directly. Your carrier will need to approve a version of OS 2.1 and push it out if you’re using a 4G LTE PlayBook

RIM posts some interesting facts on App World and the BlackBerry OS

Screen Shot 2012 03 05 at 10.53.45 AM 550x244 RIM posts some interesting facts on App World and the BlackBerry OS

RIM has let us know about one of their latest posts on the BlackBerry Developer Website. This posting contains some interesting information on App World, the BlackBerry OS, and BlackBerry Development. First, as seen in the image above, the majority of BlackBerry users are on OS 5 or 6. 78% of all free apps and 57% of paid apps are downloaded by these users.

That’s the first challenge that RIM needs to attack. Getting people to upgrade to the latest OS and/or latest device is a big part of a company strategy. RIM seems to be doing well with this on the PlayBook, where 90% of device owners upgrade to the latest OS in the first month of release, but they are falling behind in all other areas. I realize that many companies use older BlackBerry devices and that fact makes up for a huge part of these statistics, but RIM and developers shouldn’t have to be focusing on OS 5 at all.

Hit the break for the read more about these statistics…

The big question is, did the Torch 9810 live up to its hype, did RIM deliver with the new BlackBerry 7 OS and hardware accelerated graphics? Follow me after the break and find out.

Earlier today, RIM made OS 1.0.7 for the PlayBook available for download. A few short hours later the download was pulled from the servers. RIM released the following statement about the update:

“Some users who downloaded BlackBerry Tablet OS 1.0.7 today were experiencing an issue with their BlackBerry Bridge app. RIM expects to release an update to BlackBerry Tablet OS 1.0.7 later this week that will resolve this issue. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

So, if you got the update before it was pulled, enjoy. If not, you will be getting it later this week. Either way, when RIM releases the newer update later this week, we will all have a new update to get excited about.

We knew that an update for the PlayBook was due out sometime soon but we hadn’t heard anything on the date until now. The above screenshot is from an internal notification system at Bell, a Canadian carrier who currently sells the PlayBook. The page lists the PlayBook OS update for version 1.0.7 as coming on July 15, which is today. Some of the new features listed include:

  • Broader regional customization and additional language support
  • Improved productivity with BlackBerry bridge
  • Zip files received as email attachment can now be viewed on smartphone
  • Flexibility to save attachments to SD card or internal memory of smartphone
  • Improved multimedia experience
  • Pictures can be viewed in portrait or landscape layout
  • Videos can be Zoomed into while it is still playing

There’s no guarantee that this will be available today, since dates of this nature are generally unofficial until they are announced, but we can expect to see this sometime soon. Do any of these features appeal to you as a current or potential PlayBook owner?
