It seems as though carriers are holding back with new BlackBerry devices these days. While the BlackBerry Bold 9790 was meant for RIMs overseas markets that hasn’t stopped a few North American carriers from scooping this one up. Looks like Koodo Mobile is launching the Bold 9790 on their TAB system, which allows people to put up to $150 of their phone price on their contract. If you decided to put the full amount on your TAB you would be looking at paying $250 on your tab. Sadly those looking to but the phone outright will be out of luck as they’ve seemed to put the kibosh on that.

Today, Sprint officially released OS 6.0.0.600 for all the BlackBerry Bold 9650 owners out there. OS build .600 has been seen previously for a few other devices but not yet for the Bold 9650. Verizon has just released an official OS update for both the Bold 9650 and the Curve 9330. The OS build for both devices is OS 6.0.0.524 and is available on the Verizon OS update website. This OS build for both devices is stable and the preferred official OS for Verizon customers on these devices.

Other Cases for the BlackBerry Bold 9700/9780

Bank Of America (BOA) has launched a pilot program to test NFC payments. The new system is invitation-only and uses a BlackBerry with NFC to access the “Mobile Wallet.” The program uses the Curve 8500 series, Bold 9000, 9650, 9700, or Tour 9630. To enable NFC on these devices, BOA uses a custom battery door and SD card. The program begins in the “Spring” and will continue for a few months. This looks to be a great start for NFC on the BlackBerry. It’s only a small step but it sure is nice to see this technology being tested. I personally can’t wait till we have NFC for everything and we can drop our wallets in favor of our BlackBerrys. There are more screenshots from the Mobile Wallet program after the break.

Verizon has just let us know that BlackBerry 6 for both the BlackBerry Bold 9650 and BlackBerry Curve 3G are officially available as of today, January 25. The update is available as both an OTA and a desktop download. To perform the update OTA, go to Options > Advanced Options > Wireless Update and then follow the instructions there to upgrade to BlackBerry 6. If you prefer the desktop download you can connect your BlackBerry to your computer and open Desktop Manager to install the new update. Verizon let us know that the update should be available for all Verizon 9650 and Curve 3G users by 8PM EST today. The update appears to be OS 6.0.0.431 for both the Curve 3G and Bold 9650. If you update your Verizon BlackBerry to BB6 be sure to let us know what you think of it.

Looks like the holiday cheer is coming a little early to BlackBerry users as Sprint decides to push out OS 6.0.0.414 for the BlackBerry Bold 9650 and the Curve 3G. From what we’ve been told the update is not available from Desktop Manager just yet but should arrive over the next few days, until then users are able to update their devices over the air but remember that does take about 2 hrs. To start the download go to options, Advanced Options, Wireless Update and then select “Check for updates”. Let us know how the update goes and what you think of BlackBerry 6 on your BlackBerry!

We just saw Sprint roll out OS 5.0.0.1030 for the Tour 9630 on Monday and today they have released the same version number for the Bold 9650. Knowing that BlackBerry 6 has been out for so long now and carriers are still releasing OS 5 builds is frustrating for all of us. I’m not too sure why the carriers are doing this but we can be sure when BlackBerry 6 does go official for these devices that the builds will be top-notch. Verizon has just sent out some holiday mailers and in the BlackBerry section of those flyers is a possible holiday surprise for Bold and Curve users on Verizon. The flyers state that both the Curve 9330 and the Bold 9650 feature the “new BlackBerry 6 OS.” This could mean that BlackBerry 6 is coming sometime soon as an official release for both devices. There is no word on exactly when BlackBerry 6 will make its debut on these devices but with the flyers coming out we can hope to see it in the next few weeks. We had a ton of BlackBerry 6 leaks this past week and the Bold 9650 was left out. But that was remedied today when OS 6.o.0.333 leaked out for the 9650. This brings the Bold 9650 up to a version number in line with all the other BlackBerry 6 leaks we have been seeing. Hopefully we will see BlackBerry 6 bring officially released from some carriers soon since we are seeing some higher leak numbers coming through.
