RIM Releases Solution To Fix Browser Vulnerability: Disable JavaScript
12:05 am on Mar 16, 2011 | Leave a comment

The BlackBerry browser was cracked at this year’s Pwn2Own conference and RIM has created a new document in the BlackBerry Knowledge Base with the fix. The vulnerability was found in the BlackBerry 6 browser, a security exploit that exposes much of the user’s encrypted information. This is definitely a bad blow for RIM, a company known for it’s top-notch security, but one that RIM will undoubtedly fix in upcoming BlackBerry OS releases.
In the BlackBerry Knowledge Base article KB26123, RIM tells all users of BlackBerry 6 how to fix this vulnerability. To keep yourself from being exploited you should go to the settings in your BlackBerry browser and disable JavaScript. That will keep your BlackBerry secure until RIM is able to deliver a more permanent fix for this issue.

One thing that usually happens as we get closer to a launch of a new BlackBerry is replacement parts showing up online. Truesupplier now has two PlayBook replacement parts available the one showed above (replacement screen and bezel) and a PlayBook Bezel Cover Faceplate costing $82.99 and $28.99 respectively.
We’re in the final stretch of the PlayBook launch guys and gals and I can’t wait to get our review out and really dig into the first professional grade tablet.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager For PlayBook Spotted at SXSW
12:02 am on Mar 15, 2011 | Leave a comment
RIM mentioned that the PlayBook would sync with the desktop software that we already use and it looks like the guys over at Into Mobile have been able to get a first hand look at how the PlayBook syncs with your computer, and while it’s not much different then the current desktop manager there is a nice little surprise.
Probably the best part of this video is when Jeff starts to sync his music collection on the PlayBook and then he starts using the device to view photos while the process is going on in the background, there’s no device on the market that can do that. Go PlayBook! Booya!

More Information On BlackBerry PlayBook Pricing And Launch Date
12:38 pm on Mar 14, 2011 | Leave a comment

Today we have just a bit more contradicting information on the BlackBerry PlayBook. Ok, well its not all contradicting. First, let’s talk pricing. We have seen $499 rumored before for the 16GB model and that is the same price we see here. We also see $599 and $699 which would be for the 32GB and 64GB versions of the PlayBook. From all we have seen and heard these look to be a pretty good estimate of the PlayBook pricing at launch. And then we have the launch date. This document, which comes from a “major US retailer,” shows the PlayBook launching on March 27. We have heard so many dates now that it’s really anyone’s guess when the PlayBook will launch until RIM puts that press release in TheBerryFix inbox. If you ask me, i’m going to say around April 10th, but that’s just my guess…

BlackBerry PlayBook Gets Spotted in Portrait Mode at SWXS
4:06 pm on Mar 12, 2011 | Leave a comment
It’s been a while since we’ve seen a nice candid video of the BlackBerry PlayBook outside of a RIM held event and the newest video comes care of the Into Mobile team while at South By South West. In the latest video we get a nice sneak peak of portrait mode (which looks hot), Podcast app and the 7Digital music app.
While we don’t have a launch date for the PlayBook just yet, it looks like portrait mode and the 7Digital app is coming along quite nicely. Keep your browser locked to TheBerryFix.com for all your BlackBerry PlayBook needs.

More Confirmation The PlayBook Will Ship In April at Staples Locations
7:04 am on Mar 12, 2011 | Leave a comment

So nothing really new in this image from a Staples location, but what it does do is further confirm a launch date around April 17th/18th. Yesterday we posted on both Sears and Staples PlayBook launch dates of the 10th and 17th respectively and this just adds more fuel to those. Also those dates jive quite well with a previous launch rumour or April 10th. Who else is insanely excited for the PlayBook? I for sure can’t wait.

BlackBerry PlayBook Pre-Orders For Sears Canada To Begin March 12 With The Device Shipping April 10
5:43 pm on Mar 11, 2011 | Leave a comment

Just minutes after the news of the Staples BlackBerry PlayBook release leak out we get information from Sears Canada. According to an email to members of the Sears Affiliate Program, Pre-orders begin tomorrow for the PlayBook and the device will begin shipping on April 10th. Sears is a location that we have yet to see any PlayBook launch information but would fit well with RIM’s strategy of getting the PlayBook out into as many retail channels as possible. April 10th also fits well with the PlayBook release date we saw rumored last week. I guess we will find out tomorrow if Sears Canada has PlayBook pre-orders starting. Possibly a late afternoon RIM press release on the launch date? We’ll let you know as soon as we hear anything more on the PlayBook’s ever-elusive launch date.

The above image was just posted in the CrackBerry forums. It’s being reported that the image is from a Staples employee document outlining new displays to be erected in-store. The image reports an “ad date” of 4/17 which we would have to assume means that the display goes up and the product goes on sale at Staples on April 17. While this is not concrete information on a launch date, it does give us some more confirmation that the PlayBook should be making it into our hands in just a little over a month.

Rdio Announces Their API Availability And Affiliate Program At SXSW
2:57 pm on Mar 11, 2011 | Leave a comment

Rdio has been around for about six months now and there have been nothing but good reviews on the application. They offer unlimited, on-demand, streaming music that you can listen to right from your BlackBerry. We reviewed the application a few months back and I can tell you first-hand that the service is amazing. Today at SXSW Rdio made an announcement that is sure to take their service to new heights. Rdio is making their API publicly available to the mobile development community and creating a developer affiliate program to do so.
With the new program, developers will be able to utilize the majority of Rdio’s services within their own applications. Developers will now be able to create apps just for Rdio that will integrate the service into your BlackBerry Smartphone. Developers will also be able to integrate Rdio’s functions into their existing apps as well. I can definitely see some great BlackBerry integration coming to BlackBerry using this API. With Rdio not only being a music service, but also a social network, we could possibly see the app being integrated into our social clients such as SocialScope and UberSocial. It shouldn’t take long for developers to get their hands on the Rdio API and begin to develop some great BlackBerry apps. The press release from Rdio at SXSW is available after the break.

BlackBerry Wallet Updated to version 1.2.1.2 – New UI and Features
8:28 am on Mar 11, 2011 | Leave a comment

It’s nice to see RIM updating old applications and not just letting them collect dust in the dark corners of App World and the latest update comes to the BlackBerry Wallet application. If I remember correctly BlackBerry Wallet has been out since the 8830 World Edition days, so that puts it about 4 years old and still going strong as it receives a much-needed update to version 1.2.1.2. The latest update brings a few UI changes and new features like;
- Save time by automatically filling in forms with credit card information, billing addresses, shipping information and more
- Use BlackBerry Wallet to store and retrieve reward program numbers and info
- Enter and retrieve account info for logging into your favorite shopping websites
- Advanced password security keeps your credit card and billing information protected
- Add and retrieve gift card or loyalty program information to accumulate points, rewards
BlackBerry wallet and more details can be found in App World or via your desktop here.

Looks like 9700 users are about to get some good old OS leak love as OS 6.0.0.499 is hitting the download sites as we speak. As usual there are no change logs for a leaked OS so we’re not to sure whats fixed and whats broken, so use at your own risk.
**WARNING: This is not an official release for BlackBerry and therefore has not been fully tested and may contain bugs. TheBerryFix.com cannot be held responsible for any issues that may arise ether during or after installation. You are installing the leak by choice. To help the BlackBerry community please don’t forget to post your findings in the Comments.

BlackBerry PlayBook Notification System Unveiled – Well… Sorta
8:34 pm on Mar 10, 2011 | Leave a comment

Some sweet new PlayBook info was just dropped into our tip’s email account, something a lot of us have wanted to know since day one… PlayBook notifications. Last week we got a glimpse of how the PlayBook was going to let us know about a low battery, but what about a new email or BBM?
Well, according to this PlayBook documentation the notification system will work similar to the low battery indicator but with one twist. When a notification is available the top left or right corner will illuminate and then it’s up to the user to view or dismiss it. The cool thing is if you chose to look at the message or just see what the notification is all about all you have to do is swipe in from the top left or right of the PlayBook into the centre, no annoying pop-up like on other tablet devices!!
There seems to be a few more weeks left until we get our hands on the BlackBerry PlayBook, and I’m sure we’re about to learn a lot more quite quickly.
