blackberry digital compass9879 More detailed look at the digital compass found in BlackBerry 7

A few weeks back we had a glance at the new digital compass icons that is said to be included in the new operating system for BlackBerry handhelds, now known as BlackBerry 7.

If you’re sitting there thinking to yourself why would you ever need a digital compass, well then you’re in luck because I can answer that one for you. In addition to helping with navigation in mapping applications a digital compass can be used in augmented reality apps like Layer. Layer relies on the digital compass to pin point your location and to know exactly where you are looking. A digital compass could also be used in games and voice guided Turn-by-Turn navigation, giving our BlackBerry smartphones yet another feature that when combined with Super Apps make for a truly unique experience. Check out some more images after the break.

9300 534 leak OS 6.0.0.534 leaked for the BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300

In line with RIM’s new strategy of keeping OS build numbers consistent across all devices, we have another version of OS 6.0.0.534. This build comes leaked for the BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300. As usual, there’s no word on what has changed in this OS. It’s nice to see RIM keeping up with updates on BlackBerry 6, as we know that BlackBerry OS 6.1 is on it’s way. There’s still no word on which, if any, older BlackBerry devices will get OS 6.1 If you want the latest BB6 build on you Curve 9300, hit the link below.

The One to Rule Them All – BlackBerry 6.1 and QNX Together Form BlackBerry 7

posted by Zach Gilbert at on Mar 30, 2011 | Leave a comment

qnx and BlackBerry 6.1 The One to Rule Them All BlackBerry 6.1 and QNX Together Form BlackBerry 7

Over and over again I’ve been saying that we won’t see a QNX based BlackBerry handheld operating system until at least 2012, and it looks like my thoughts may have been correct.

BlackBerry 6.1 seems to be on track for a late spring release (think end of May) and from what we’ve heard it’s going to be the big overhaul that BlackBerry 6 should have been. With fluid graphics and Open GL support, this newest operating system seems to be ready for a QNX and BlackBerry 6 amalgamation.

Recently RIM had an internal developer event and the key topic seemed to be BlackBerry 6.1 and BlackBerry 7, some of the take aways can be found below.

  • A big portion of the talk is focusing on the benefit RIM will get from centralizing processes and tools
  • One of the key reasons OS 6.1 is falling behind schedule is miscommunication between teams in the critical path of the project
  • He didn’t focus on the problems as much as how RIM is going to solve them by easing conflicts in the critical path
  • There is a new project “Highlander” using the concept from the movies “There can be only one”
  • This project is taking the best features from OS 6.1 and the QNX OS to make OS 7. This seems to be where the rumors about OS 6.1 having a QNX core are coming from
  • RIM is “very happy” with OS 6.1 but is struggling with losing the features users love
  • OS 6.1 is almost 10 years old and has pushed its limits
  • Still they are very happy about the “Liquid Graphics” in OS 6.1 adding a WOW factor to BlackBerrys
  • This new OS 7 will also be the OS for the Playbook down the road. Seeing the theme of “there can be only one” ?
  • RIM is still in the “early stages” of OS 7 with a target of 2012

It seems to be that RIM is taking a more Apple-like approach with their OS and keeping the same versions across their platform. There’s both good and bad things associated with this. The good thing is that developers will have an easier time knowing that the same API’s are available on both platforms making it easier for them to create compelling apps and essentially just change the screen resolutions and input methods for each platform. The bad side is that we will probably start to see an almost identical UI on both devices which could get boring quick.

I’m quite excited for RIM with all the acquisitions they have made in the last two years, they’re setting themselves up for success. All I can do is hope all these amazing things come sooner rather than later, but I’m sure things will be cleared up once we head down to sunny Orlando Florida for the all new BlackBerry World conferences that kicks of May 2nd.

From what we’ve been told the update is not available from Desktop Manager just yet but should arrive over the next few days, until then users are able to update their devices over the air but remember that does take about 2 hrs. To start the download go to options, Advanced Options, Wireless Update and then select “Check for updates”. Let us know how the update goes and what you think of BlackBerry 6 on your BlackBerry!
