The latest news about RIM comes as no surprise, especially after seeing many stories of the falling stock price and predictions that RIM will not survive through 2013. Reuters is reporting that RIM is currently mulling over a two-step plan for the company. The first of those steps would be a split of the company into two divisions. Those two divisions would be RIM Hardware and RIM Software. After a business split, the two companies could then be sold off to any of the potential buyers out there, think Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft.
While this remains just a rumor at this point, there is some degree of feasibility to this, especially after RIM announced the hiring of JP Morgan and RBC last month to help the company evaluate its options. A split of the company and sale of the hardware division could keep RIM alive, something that I know all BlackBerry fans are hoping for. However, if they were to split and sell both divisions, it could truly mark the end of Research in Motion. We’ll keep you informed as we continue to hear more rumors and official news on this story.
