One of the most dreaded errors on a BlackBerry has got to be the 504-software error. The 504 error essentially means you have no OS loaded onto your BlackBerry or is so corrupt that your device thinks it’s missing. So in this BlackBerry School lesson we are going to dive right in and help you recover your BlackBerry. Check out the full lesson after the break.

So you were updating your BlackBerry and to your surprise your device boots into this screen and not your normal home screen? Don’t scream, everything will be okay. But first your going to have to come to terms that all of your data is in fact lost, but seeing your a BlackBerry expert I’m sure you were doing weekly backups so everything will be fine. Follow the steps to get a working BlackBerry again.

Step 1.

First you’re going to need to download and install the operating system for your blackberry from it’s carrier. Here I’ll google that for you.

Step 2:

After installation is complete you will need to open up Dektop Manager, if you don’t have that installed head over to BlackBerry.com/desktopsoftware.

Step 3:

Once your phone is plugged into the computer you should get an error message like this, and that’s a good thing. Select “Update” and follow into step 4.

Step 4:

Desktop manager is now going to look for the latest BlackBerry OS, but because we already installed it onto the computer this should only take a minute.

Step 5:

Fantastic! Desktop manager has found an update for your device; now you can select “get update” and let the software go to work.

Step 6:

Before the software can fix your BlackBerry you will need to let it know which OS you want to install. A best practice would be to uninstall any previous OS versions from your computers application screen. Select the OS that we installed previous and carry onto the next step.

Step 7:

Seeing that your BlackBerry doesn’t think there is an operating system you wont be able to back up any data, so unselect “email me” and then click on install update.

Step 8:

Select “ok” to the message letting you know that a registration of your email accounts will be needed to continue receiving email on your BlackBerry.

Step 9:

Now sit back and relax as your BlackBerry is brought back from the dead. After this screen you should get a message letting you know that the update has been successful and you should have a working BlackBerry. Congratulations, it wasn’t that hard now was it?
