RIM has announced a new certification that has been achieved by both BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 and BlackBerry Device Service. Both pieces of software are now FIPS 140-2 Certified, meaning they are certified as the most secure mobile services available. Everyone knows what BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 is; however, most won’t be familiar with BlackBerry Device Service. This is the portion of BlackBerry Mobile Fusion that manages BlackBerry Devices on the server. It’s basically the BES portion of Mobile Fusion.
Having this certification is huge for RIM, especially since they are counting on the PlayBook, BlackBerry 10, and BlackBerry Device Service to enable them to continue support for government and enterprise customers who require top-level security. This is also a good sign for BlackBerry 10′s security future. It has been widely quoted that since BlackBerry 10 devices could be rooted and jailbroken, they would not achieve the required security standards for government use. Seeing PlayBook OS 2.0 certified, this gives BlackBerry 10 a good chance. Check out the link below for more information on these FIPS Certifications.
